Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers currently has a tall task ahead of him as he looks to upend the Boston Celtics and lead his team to the NBA Finals.

United States President Joe Biden is equally busy with, y’know, running the country and trying to get re-elected in November.

So it only makes sense that the two would get together for a private meeting when Biden was in Milwaukee for an event recently…right?

As they say, truth is stranger than fiction.

But that’s exactly what happened last week when Biden held a private meeting with Rivers and Bucks owner Wes Edens following an event at a Milwaukee Boys and Girls Club according to Eli Stokols of POLITICO.

“Rivers, 62, is not a billionaire, but also is no stranger to presidential politics,” Stokols writes. “He endorsed Biden during the 2020 campaign in a video alongside Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr that was produced by the anti-Trump group, The Lincoln Project.”

Why in the world would he meet with Rivers? Apparently, it’s part of a growing trend.

“The meeting illuminates an emerging pattern for the president, in which he sets aside time while traveling to hold one-on-one discussions with a range of individuals,” Stokols reports.

Joe Biden And Doc Rivers Have A History

But it’s not the first time Biden and Rivers have brushed shoulders

In a 2020 campaign speech, Biden invoked Rivers’ words during a speech at Gettysburg National Military Park.

“Doc Rivers, the basketball coach, choking back tears when he said, ‘We’re the ones getting killed. We’re the ones getting shot. We’ve been hung. It’s amazing how we keep loving this country, and this country does not love us back,’” Biden quoted. “I think about that. I think about what it takes for a black person to love America. That is a deep love for this country that has, for far too long, never been recognized.”

Rivers was coaching the Philadelphia 76ers at the time.

“I am honored that Vice President Biden chose my words as an example for needing social change,” Rivers said in response. “These are human rights issues that we are fighting for. Every American should want social justice for all, regardless of race, gender, or political beliefs.”

Who knows, maybe Rivers will land a cabinet spot after things inevitably go south in Milwaukee?
